A couple of months after launching its Duo video calling app, Google has revealed that it’s making a big push to boost usage of the app.
Google is emailing Google Mobile Services (GMS) partners to tell them that Duo will soon become part of the GMS package of apps that must be installed in telephony Android products (aka smartphones). The app will become part of GMS on December 1 and will replace Hangouts, will will become an optional GMS install.
What this means is that, starting on December 1, manufacturers that want to install Google apps like Gmail and Google on their Android devices will also have to install Duo.
This news shows that Google is really pushing Duo, hoping to make it the go-to video calling app for Android users. Making the app a required part of the GMS package will put Duo front and center on new Android phones, exposing it to millions of people that may not normally have known about it.
