Ever go to download a new app, only to remember that you’re trying to conserve data on your plan? If so, you may be interested in a new Play Store feature that’s undergoing testing.
Some Android users are seeing a new dialog box when attempting a Play Store download that asks if they’d like to download their app right away over cellular or if they’ve like to postpone the download until they’re connected to Wi-Fi. If you select “Wait for Wi-Fi,” the download will automatically begin the next time you’re on a Wi-Fi connection.
The dialog box also mentions that this feature is currently in beta, so not everyone has it right now. There doesn’t appear to be a way to trigger it, either, so you’ll just have to wait and hope that it appears for you.
There’s currently a Play Store feature that’ll warn you when you try to download an app over cellular and ask if you’d rather wait until you’re on Wi-Fi, but the warning only pops up if you attempt a download that’s more than 100MB. The new feature is popping up with much smaller apps, though.
Google hasn’t made any official announcements about this Play Store feature, so for now, we’ll just have to wait and see if it becomes an official addition to the Play Store. It could come in handy for anyone on a metered data plan, though, so here’s to hoping that this feature does get a wide release.
