Google Maps gaining Wi-Fi-only mode, support for saving maps to SD card

Remember that Wi-Fi-only mode that we saw in Google Maps last month? It’s now official, along with some other new features.

Google Maps now includes a “Wi-Fi only” toggle in its Settings. As its name suggests, this mode will only use data when connected to Wi-Fi. With this mode, you can save on data or avoid slow-loading maps due to spotty cellular service by relying only on Wi-Fi. Plus, this toggle means that you can keep Google Maps in Wi-Fi-only mode without toggling off cellular for all of your other apps.

Another new feature on Google Maps for Android is SD support. With it, you can save your offline maps to your device’s external SD card, which many folks use to supplement their phone’s internal storage.

Finally, Google Maps now supports GO-JEK ride services in three cities in Indonesia, with 10 more cities coming soon. This feature is on Android and rolling out to iOS. Google is also adding Grab rides in 24 cities in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, as well as expanding the availability of Gett, Hailo, and MyTaxi in cities in Ireland, Poland, Italy, Austria, Russia, and Israel.
