Microsoft has released a number of Android and iPhone apps lately, including some apps that aren’t even on Microsoft’s own Windows platform yet. Today Microsoft is launching another new app on iPhone.
Microsoft Pix is now available in the Apple App Store. Microsoft touts Pix as “a smarter camera app” that’ll help you take better photos. It uses artificial intelligence to snap photos, automatically choose the best picture of a burst, and then enhance it for you.
There are a few different Pix features that Microsoft touts. For example, the app will detect when there’s a face in your shot an optimize its settings for people. Pix also uses discarded frames from each burst to enhance the one that it thinks is best by improving color and reducing blur.
When you snap a photo with Pix, the app will also grab frames before and after you hit the shutter button. This feature only works when the app detects motion. You can then create a short, looping live image by stitching together the frames at the beginning and end of the photo. Microsoft Pix can capture video, too, stabilizing them for smoother playback. You can save videos at different speeds for hyperlapse clips.
The Microsoft Pix interface is pretty clean, offering a black and white look and large buttons for capturing a photo, switching cameras, or changing to video mode. The app takes a second or two to work its magic after you snap an image, and when it’s done you can go to an edit screen to tweak it further if you’d like. There’s also a “Compare” button that’ll let you view the photo as it came straight from the camera as well as what it looks like with Microsoft Pix’s tweaks.
There’s no word on when or if Microsoft Pix will launch on Android or Windows 10 Mobile. If you’ve got an iOS device, though, you can try it by clicking this App Store link.
