Sony Xperia F8331 appears in leaked photos with new design, USB Type-C

Sony’s been switching up its mobile strategy lately, moving from its former Xperia Z flagship line to new Xperia X devices with super-slim bezels. Now some newly-leaked images show that Sony may have even more new stuff up its sleeve.

Photos that claim to show an unannounced Sony Xperia smartphone have leaked. The device is referred to as the F8331, which is likely its model number and not the name that it’ll officially launch with.

From the front, the F8331 doesn’t look radically different from previous Xperia phones, but that changes once you move around the phone. The sides of the phone are curved, whereas previous Xperia phones have been flat on all four sides, and the back of the phone houses a dual LED flash setup, which is another notable change from previous Sony devices. Finally, the bottom of the phone is home to a USB Type-C port, which would be a first on a Sony handset.

Spec details on this Sony Xperia F8331 are light, but it’s said to have a display that’s slight larger than the Xperia X Performance, which has a 5-inch screen. The resolution is the same, though, coming in at 1920x1080. Both the front and rear cameras on the F8331 are expected to support 4K video capture.

With IFA set to take place from September 2 through September 7, there’s a chance that we could see the F8331 make its official debut there. It’s tough to really say much about this F8331 when the details on it are so light, but it is nice to see Sony switching up its design formula a bit and also adopting reversible USB Type-C for charging. And unlike some other manufacturers that are using USB Type-C, Sony is keeping the 3.5mm headphone jack with the F8331, too.
