New month, new Android distribution stats from Google.
Google has shared its June 2016 Android platform distribution numbers, which show the different versions of Android that’ve been used to access the Play Store during the seven-day period ending June 6. First up is Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which appeared on 10.1 percent of devices. That’s up from May when it appeared on 7.5 percent of devices.
Android Lollipop appeared on 35.4 percent of devices during the seven-day study period, down just a hair from 35.6 percent in May. Breaking it down into the two different flavors of Lollipop, Android 5.1 grew to 20.0 percent but Android 5.0 dropped to 15.4 percent.
Android 4.4 KitKat appeared on 31.6 percent of devices in June, down from 32.5 percent in May. Meanwhile, Jelly Bean (Android 4.1-4.3) accounted for 18.9 percent of devices in June, down from 20.1 percent in May. Rounding out Android 4.x is 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which dropped from 2.0 percent in May to 1.9 percent in June.
Finally, Android 2.3 Gingerbread fell from 2.2 percent in May to 2.0 percent in June, while Android 2.2 Froyo held steady at 0.1 percent.
There’s not much surprise in Google’s June 2016 numbers, as new devices continue to launch with Android 6.0 and existing devices get updated to Marshmallow. Meanwhile, older versions pretty much all dropped as consumers continue to move to Marshmallow. While Android 6.0 is still lagging behind Lollipop, KitKat, and even Jelly Bean, it’s good to see Marshmallow finally surpass the 10 percent adoption threshold.
