Security is always a hot topic in mobile, and some devices highlight their beefed up security as a main selling point. One of those very phones was announced today, and it’s called the Solarin.
The Sirin Labs Solarin is touted as being an ultra-secure smartphone, using “state-of-the-art mobile threat protection that thwarts the broadest array of advanced device, network, and application mobile cyberattacks.” That includes the same chip-to-chip 256-bit AES encryption used by militaries around the globe and a Security Switch on the back of the phone (shown below) that can fully encrypt calls and messages.
The device itself carries a premium design with a body covered in black or white carbon leather. There will be four variants available at launch that include models with titanium, yellow gold, and diamond-like carbon finishes.
In terms of raw specs, the Solarin runs Android on a 5.5-inch 2560x1440 display with Gorilla Glass 4 and has a 23.8-megapixel rear camera with four-tone flash and laser autofocus. Inside of the Solarin’s leather-clad body is a Snapdragon 810 processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of built-in storage, and a 4,040mAh battery. Sirin Labs also touts the Solarin as being “truly global,” offering support for 24 bands of LTE.
The Solarin is available online and will be sold in select stores in the UK. Pricing starts at $13,800 USD/£9,500 for the Black Carbon Titanium model and goes up to $14,900 for the Black Carbon Diamond-Like Carbon version, $15,900 for the Crystal White Diamond-like Carbon model, $17,400 for the Black Carbon Yellow Gold device.
Considering its starting price, features, and materials, the Solarin is clearly aimed at a certain segment of the market. Most of us probably won’t ever handle one, but for consumers that have money to burn and want a secure, premium smartphone, the Solarin could fit the bill. The rest of us will have to settle for looking at the Solarin in images and video.
