It feels like it’s been a while since we’ve seen any major legal battles in mobile, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. That’s changing today, though.
Huawei has sued Samsung for allegedly infringing on its smartphone patents related to 4G tech as well as operating system and user interface software. “We hope Samsung will…stop infringing out patents and get the necessary license from Huawei, and work together with Huawei to jointly drive the industry forward,” said Ding Jinxing, president of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Rights Department.
Samsung hasn’t yet issued a comment on Huawei’s allegations.
Samsung is no stranger to mobile patent lawsuits, having been engaged in a long battle with Apple that started in 2011 and spanned multiple countries. We haven’t seen Huawei in quite as many lawsuits as Samsung, but Huawei has decided to wade into the legal waters after it feels that Samsung used its patented tech without paying for the licenses to do so. Now we wait to see if these lawsuits actually go anywhere or if the two companies end up reaching a settlement.
