Samsung has never been shy with their marketing tactics. It’s not that they’re annoying or bad, it’s just that they’re… everywhere. They’re positively everywhere. Even when I’m not specifically looking for Samsung, I will find them. Online, in a store, on TV, on a billboard, or anywhere else that you could possibly place an advertisement; if there’s a space for an ad, there's a good chance that Samsung is there.
It’s actually worked out very well for Samsung. With all of those ads in place, it’s difficult to forget about them. That whole “Out of sight, out of mind,” thing actually holds true for some people. While Samsung isn’t the only manufacturer to come out with a new flagship this year, they are the company that I think about most often. I'm a big of HTC (and happy about how the 10 has turned out), and I’m probably one of three people that was impressed by LG’s bold moves with the G5. But every time I get close to pulling the trigger on maybe possibly buying a new phone, the Galaxy S7 is usually the front-runner in my mind because I'm always reminded that it exists.
It certainly helps that the Galaxy S7 genuinely seems to be a good product, with Samsung honing on the details of last year’s Galaxy S6. Freebies or not, I imagine if negative reviews flooded websites, we would have a very different story to report on. Overall, many people – enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike – are impressed with how the Galaxy S7 turned out, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Samsung’s profits are taking a turn for the better with a 14% increase.
Still, it’s no secret that the constantly running promotions are seriously boosting the exposure for the S7, which is what I think is truly what makes the S7 so popular. Some of these promotions are the best I’ve ever seen. When the S7 was first released, every major carrier here in the U.S. offered a BOGO at one point or another. If you pre-ordered the Galaxy S7, you got a free Gear VR headset. If you buy a Galaxy S7 from AT&T (Next) and sign up with DirecTV or U-Verse, you can get a free Samsung Smart TV. Alternatively, you can also get a free Samsung Galaxy S6 when you purchase a Samsung Galaxy S7 from AT&T. Obviously not as good as the initial BOGO for two free Galaxy S7s, but it’s still a pretty darn good deal.
The promotions don’t stop with the purchase of the device, either. Samsung also offers numerous promotions throughout the year if you choose to use Samsung Pay – and that’s on any Samsung phone that uses Samsung Pay, not just the latest flagship. Gifts cards, wireless chargers, rebates, and sweepstakes entries are some of the offers we’ve seen in the past, and I’m sure there are more to come in the future as we rapidly adjust to the world of paying with our smartphones, and Samsung hopes to win you over.
I find that it’s hard to not to be tempted a little bit. Even though I’m not the biggest fan of TouchWiz, the Galaxy S7 is one of the hottest phones of year, and has the added bonus of getting some of the best deals available in mobile. Heck, if you’re lucky enough to pair up Samsung’s promotions with what T-Mobile has to offer lately (and perhaps soon in the future, if you believe the rumors regarding the next Un-carrier move) you could be living pretty large off of these two companies alone.
Marketing ploy or not, it is kind of nice to see that some companies throw customers a bone every once in a while to make them feel valued.
