Word has it that Apple’s got some big changes in store for its next iPhone. It’s being called the “iPhone 7” right now, before the Cupertino-based company gets around to officially unveiling it, but that’s probably a safe bet. And as far as those changes go, we could see a glass phone (again), and the iPhone 7 Plus could boast a dual-camera system on the back. And both variants of Apple’s next big flagship could be dropping the 3.5 mm headphone jack, too.

The loss of the headphone jack is one of the more persistent rumors out there. It’s cropped up frequently enough over the last few months, so much so that it’s basically become a foregone conclusion at this point. In fact, it would probably be more surprising if Apple actually includes a headphone jack in their new iPhone later this year.

So, maybe it’s not a surprise that other companies are starting to ditch the headphone jack, too.

Earlier today, a company called LeEco released a few new Android-based smartphones, and all of them were missing one thing: the headphone jack. So instead of plugging in your standard 3.5mm-wired headphones into the phone, you’ll need to get USB Type-C headphones instead. I’m sure they exist out there in the wild, but obviously they aren’t as plentiful, and probably aren’t already owned by millions of people.

So, it’s either get some new headphones or use an adapter. Personally, and I mean this as vehemently as I possibly can, an adapter isn’t an option. My phone is my go-to device for a variety of things, like listening to music just about everywhere, but I won’t plug in an accessory to achieve that goal. I haven’t seen anywhere that says the new LeEco phones come with USB Type-C headphones in the box, but I’m sure hoping they do.

Apple will, undoubtedly, include Lightning headphones in the box with its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus if those devices do indeed drop the headphone jack. Sure, Apple will sell an adapter, too, for folks that don’t want to use those headphones, and there’s probably little doubt out there that Apple won’t also release high-end, and more expensive, Lightning (or completely wireless) headphones around the same time.

If companies like LeEco are already starting to move away from the headphone jack, in preparation of Apple’s potential move several months from now, what happens in the future when it becomes a reality? What if Samsung, Motorola, LG, and other companies decide to go the same route? Are we facing an inevitable future where the headphone jack is a historical feature?

Facing that future right now doesn’t seem all that pleasing, to be honest. I use headphones every day, and I don’t personally want to see the headphone jack get the axe just yet. It works. Of course, in a future where all of the companies are launching high-end flagship devices (or all of their smartphones) without a headphone jack all of this is a moot point anyway, and since I won’t use an adapter, and I’m sure many people out there won’t, we’ll have no choice but to conform anyway. Just like most of us have with bigger displays.
