Android 6.0 making its way to global Sony Xperia Z5 devices as well as Z3+ and Z4 Tablet

We’re starting to see Android 6.0 updates roll out in earnest lately, with updates from the likes of LG, HTC, and Samsung arriving in the past couple months. Now Sony is starting its Marshmallow push as well.

The Sony Xperia Z5 family is starting to receive its Android 6.0 updates, reports Xperia Blog. That includes the global variants of the Xperia Z5 as well as its Xperia Z5 Compact and Xperia Z5 Premium brethren. Included in the updates is Android 6.0, Google’s February 2016 security patches, and an updated launcher.

Unfortunately, it appears that Sony has opted not to include Android 6.0’s adoptable storage in these Xperia Z5 updates. Adoptable storage is a Marshmallow feature that lets you treat an external microSD card as internal storage and put important app data on it. The downside is that if you need to use that microSD card for something else or you want to upgrade your card, the process of un-adopting storage can be a pain. That’s probably why companies like Sony and Samsung have chosen not to include the feature in its phones.

Even if Sony’s Android 6.0 update is missing adoptable storage, this is still a big update for the company’s flagships, and it’s good to see it rolling out right around the same time as other major Android phones. It’s also said that the Xperia Z3+ and Xperia Z4 Tablet are getting their Android 6.0 updates, too, so this is a big week for Sony. If you’ve got any of these Sony phones, keep an eye out for your serving of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
