The HTC Vive is a virtual reality headset that’s being made as a collaboration between HTC and Valve, the company behind the popular Steam gaming service. The Vive originally debuted in March 2015, and since then it’s hit the demo circuit so that people can see what the device is all about. Details on the Vive’s public launch were a bit murky that whole time, but today HTC cleared things up.
The HTC Vive will launch to consumers in April 2016. That’s a been later than HTC originally anticipated, but it’s also a much more narrow release window than the one given to us by HTC back in March. Unfortunately, HTC has yet to confirm an official price for the Vive.
Before the Vive launches to consumers, HTC will make 7000 units available to developers, which ought to ensure that there’s plenty of content for the Vive when it launches to consumers. HTC also notes that it will launch the second generation HTC Vive Developer Kit at CES, so we’ve got something to look forward to in January, too.
We’re seeing a big push for VR devices lately, including some mobile manufacturers. Samsung just released its Gear VR, which requires a Galaxy phone to use, and then we’ve got this HTC Vive. The Vive is a higher-end VR headset that will require a PC to use, and so its price is probably going to be a bit higher than the $99 Gear VR. That said, it seems like most of the early impressions of the Vive are positive, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the consumer version performs.
