Google Play Books update brings easier Android comic reading, free comics

Comic fan? If so, you’ll be happy to hear that Google is improving Google Play Books with some big comic-focused improvements.

Google Play Books is being updated with a new feature that’ll make reading comics on a small device easier. Simply turn your phone or tablet on its side and you’ll get a new vertical scrolling experience that’ll let you swipe through comic panels with vertical swipes.

Additionally, Google is making it easier to find comics in the Play Store. It’s launching curated pages for popular comic series that’ll organize volumes and issues, and it’ll also make personalized recommendations for series that it thinks you’ll love.

These sound like some solid additions to Google Play Books. While phones are definitely getting bigger, it can still be annoying to try and read through a comics panels by constantly swiping around a display. Google Play Books’ new vertical scrolling panel solves that issue. And hey, who doesn’t like getting personalized recommendations for new comics to check out?

This updated version of Google Play Books is rolling out to Android over the next few days in the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, India, Singapore, Ireland, New Zealand, and South Africa. It'll hit iOS soon.

To celebrate this new comic-focused features, Google is giving away 44 comics in the Google Play Books section of the Play Store. There are lots of issue #1s to get you started on a new series, and there are some big-name series available, including The Walking Dead and Saga.
