Verizon may soon start charging $20 activation fee on device payment plans

If you’re planning to upgrade to a new Verizon phone on or after November 15, you might want to prepare to pay an extra $20, too.

A report from Droid-Life claims that, starting November 15, Verizon will begin charging a $20 activation fee on new phones purchased with a monthly device payment plan. The activation fee is actually in effect right now, but Verizon is currently waiving the fee.

Activation fees like this are a bummer, especially for folks that are already on Verizon and just need to switch their SIM card into a new phone. It’s tough to avoid if you just want to upgrade your phone and pay it off in monthly increments, though, it sounds like you’ll have to pay an additional $20 when you upgrade. The good news is that we’ve gotten wind of this possible change a few days before it happens, so if you’re thinking about upgrading to a new phone on Verizon, you can still avoid the fee.
