Google Drive on Android and iOS gaining shared file notifications and more

We know that Google likes to issue app updates on Wednesdays, and today it looks like we’ve got a spiffy Google Drive update to look forward to.

The new version of Google Drive includes mobile notifications that will hit your device immediately after someone shares a file or folder with you. Tapping the notification will take you directly to the shared file or folder.

That’s not all the newness in today’s Google Drive update. Google is also adding support for Android users to request access to a file with a single tap, and both Android and iOS users will now receive notifications of file access requests. Finally, Android users can now preview files without a Google Account, just like you can on the web.

Google says that some of these new features have already rolled out, while the rest will hit users in the coming week. The new shared file alerts are big because they save the time of having to jump into your email and read a message when a file is shared with you. The other new features are also notable, though, because they allow you to get more done with Google Drive on your phone rather than making you move to a laptop or desktop for certain tasks.
