After recently extending the Direct Message character limit to 10,000 characters, a report claims that Twitter may soon let users post Tweets that are longer than 140 characters.
Sources speaking to Re/code claim that Twitter is “building a new product” that’ll let its users post Tweets that are longer than 140 characters, the limit that’s been in place since Twitter launched in 2006. It’s not know exactly how Twitter plans to make this happen but it’s said that Twitter interim CEO Jack Dorsey is supportive of such a change.
Another change that Twitter is reportedly considering is changing the way that Twitter counts characters in Tweets. Currently, links and usernames count toward your 140-character limit in a Tweet, but it’s possible that Twitter will eliminate that.
As I said before, Twitter has had a 140-character limit on Tweets since the service launched in 2006, so it’d be kind of crazy to see Twitter drop that limit after 9 years. Such a move would certainly get Twitter some attention, but it could end up getting a mixed response. While some folks would like longer Tweets, others enjoy the challenge of fitting their message into 140 characters. And for folks that do want longer Tweets, there are ways to get around the limit. Those include TwitLonger, OneShot, or simply posting an image of a note with a lengthy message on it.
