It’s September 25 and that means it’s iPhone day, at least for this year. So people lined up all over the world, ran down lines of cheering strangers, and then walked out of a store with a new phone in hand. Eventually all of the noise will die down, and the iPhone 6s/6s Plus will be just another pair of handsets in the sea that makes up this congested market.

New iPhones have always garnered plenty of attention, but of course the public’s fervor for the new handset every year has just worked itself into a fever pitch over the years. For anyone that might not be paying much attention to the smartphone market, and based on coverage and sales numbers, one might suggest that Apple’s iPhone is the only phone that matters, or even gets bought at all.

While Apple’s sales could easily suggest that the iPhone really is the only phone that anyone’s buying, that’s not to say that the other companies in the market aren’t doing anything interesting, or, more specifically, launching worthwhile phones of their own.

While Samsung is figuring out the future of its handsets (metal, no microSD card, tons of hardware specs), other companies are doing the same thing with just slight tweaks here and there to the game plan. Motorola, LG, OnePlus, Nextbit, BLU, and plenty of other companies all want a piece of the smartphone pie, and launching interesting devices that are worth buying is the only way to try and get it.

And, just like many other years, those companies managed to accomplish that in varying degrees of success.

LG with its G4, Motorola with its brand new Moto X devices, OnePlus with the OnePlus 2, and so on. There are options out there. Companies are making interesting and worthwhile smartphones that aren’t Apple.

But you all know this already, and I’m sure many of you don’t own an iPhone. In fact, I’m sure many of you might have bought a new smartphone this year, and it wasn’t an iPhone. So that’s what I want to hear from you now:
