Twitter officially drops 140 character limit on Direct Messages

Twitter previously said that it’d raise the 140 character limit on Direct Messages in July, and while it missed that launch window, it didn’t miss it too badly.

Twitter says that its removing the 140 character limit on Direct Messages today. However, it’s worth noting that the limit isn’t completely gone. The new limit is 10,000 characters, which ought to be enough for just about any messages that you want to send, save for super trolly ones.

While some folks are still clamoring for editable Tweets or a removal on the 140 character limit for Tweets, this DM change is still a welcome one. Lots of folks use Twitter DMs for easy, protected conversations, and now DMs are much better suited for that purpose. And the good news is that since Twitter originally announced this change back in June, most of your Twitter apps should already support longer DMs.
