Nexus 6, Nexus 5, Galaxy S6, and more devices getting Stagefright patch update today

Days after the Sprint version of the Galaxy Note 4 got a patch to fix Android’s Stagefright bug, several more devices are slated to get the same patch today.

The Nexus 6 and Nexus 5 are both slated to begin getting updates to patch Stagefright today, says Sprint, with the build number for both updates being LMY48I. Also expected to get Stagefright fixes are the Sprint versions of the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 edge, Galaxy Note Edge, and Galaxy S5.

The Stagefright bug was revealed at the end of July. The exploit can be built into an MMS message and can actually be run multiple times depending on the messaging app that you use. For example, Hangouts will allow the malicious code to run when you see a notification preview or touch or rotate your device’s screen with the malicious message up. While we haven’t yet heard of anyone taking advantage of this bug, it’s still a big issue, and so it’s good to see Google and Sprint working to push out the patch to several devices.
