Smartphone cameras seem to be getting better and better each year, and many folks like to share the images that they snap with their phones. Popular Instagram app has long displayed photos at a resolution of 640x640, which is pretty low for today’s phones, but that’s going to change soon.
Mike Krieger, Instagram co-founder, says that the photo-sharing app is now starting to accept 1080x1080 photo uploads and increased image quality viewing. Support for higher-res images is now starting to roll out to both the Android and iOS versions of the Instagram app.

While Instagram’s filters were originally meant to conceal the lower-quality cameras found on smartphones from years ago, Instagram’s 640x640 resolution for photos does a bit of a disservice to the high-quality cameras on phones like the Galaxy S6, G4, and iPhone 6. It’s great to see Instagram finally responding to the awesome cameras on these phones by bumping up the resolution of its apps, and I’m betting that avid ‘Grammers are pretty pumped that the Instagram apps are going to start showing better versions of their shots.
