Canonical has released two Ubuntu phones so far in 2015, and while they’re interesting because they’re the first pair of Ubuntu phones released to the public, their entry-level specs may make them a little less appealing to folks that want a flagship-level device. If you’re one of those people, good news: that device has come.
The Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition is launching tomorrow, June 25, in Europe. The phone will be priced at 299 Euros ($334 USD). Unfortunately, buying one isn’t going to be as simple as pointing your browser at a website and clicking “Add to Cart.” Instead, you’ll need an invitation from Meizu’s website.
If you are lucky enough to snag a Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition, you’ll be getting a phone with a 5.36-inch 1920x1152 display with Gorilla Glass 3, a 20.7-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front cam, and 16GB of storage. Powering the MX4 is an octa-core processor and 2GB of RAM.
The Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition is considerably higher-end than the previous two Ubuntu phones, which offered 720p or lower resolution displays and 1GB of RAM. The MX4 and its high-end spec list is good for the Ubuntu for phones platform because its high-end spec list might convince some consumers to finally pull the trigger on their first Ubuntu handset. Here’s to hoping that more high-end Ubuntu phones are coming.
