Google is prepping a new health-focused wristband

Google works on a lot of crazy projects outside of mobile, like its Loon balloons that deliver internet access to undeveloped areas. Now the company’s next major project has been revealed.

Google X, Google’s research division, is working on a wristband that can measure pulse, heartbeat rhythm, and skin temperature, as well as information from the environment around you like light exposure and noise levels. Andy Conrad, head of Google’s life sciences team, said that the device is mean to be prescribed to medical patients or used in clinical trials.

So when can you get one? Well, it won’t be as simple as buying the device from the Google Store. Conrad says that Google’s new wristband isn’t a consumer device, so most of us likely won’t ever strap one onto our wrists.

Most modern smartwatches can do things like track your heartbeat, but they’re probably not good enough to be used for serious medical applications. That’s where Google’s new wristband comes in, which is totally focused on helping users monitor their health. And while it may not be the most attractive device around, if it does its job of monitoring pulse, heartbeat rhythm, skin temperature, and more, then that’s what matters.
