UPDATE: HTC spokesman Jeff Gordon has told Phone Scoop that Jack Tong “didn’t say what some press are attributing to him.” Gordon went on to say that while he isn’t confirming that a mini One M9 is in the works, Tong did not say that no more mini phones will be made.
Just a couple of weeks after HTC confirmed that the One mini and One mini 2 won’t be getting Android 5.0 updates, we’ve gotten some more bad news for fans of shrunken smartphones.
HTC has said that it’s got no plans to make a mini version of the One M9. HTC North Asia president Jack Tong recently explained the decision by saying that “overall the industry is moving towards new phones over 5 inches in size and our product roadmap is close to that of the industry.”
The HTC One mini featured a 4.3-inch screen, down from the HTC One M7’s 4.7-inch display, while the One mini 2 had a 4.5-inch screen that’d been shrunk from 5.0 inches on the One M8. While it’s true that the mobile industry is trending toward bigger and bigger phones, I’m sure that there are quite a few folks that like smaller phones that are easier to use with one hand. Apparently there weren’t enough of them buying HTC’s smaller phones, though. And with HTC’s recent announcement that both the One mini and One mini 2 won’t be getting Lollipop, there may not be many people pouring one out for HTC’s One mini lineup.
