Apple trade-in program will reportedly accept non-iPhone devices, including Android phones [UPDATED]

UPDATE: Now Buzzfeed reports that its own "sources familiar with Apple's plans" have also said that Apple will soon accept Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone devices for trade-in.

Last year Apple introduced its new large-screen iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, two devices that may have convinced some Android users to make the jump to iOS. Now Apple may be preparing an offer to try and convince more Androiders to make the switch.

Apple is reportedly planning a trade-in program that’ll accept non-iOS hardware, including Android devices. Sources tell 9to5Mac that the program will see Apple Store employees gauging the condition and trade-in value of devices and then issuing Apple gift cards for them that can be used for the purchase of a new iPhone. Employees will allegedly be able to transfer contacts from an old device to a new iPhone, but customers will need to transfer all other content on their own.

Training for this new non-iPhone trade-in program will reportedly take place later this week. A launch is expected to go down “in the coming weeks.”

Some Android device owners may be planning to just upgrade to the newest model in the device family that they’re familiar with, like Samsung’s Galaxy or HTC’s One. Apple’s goal with this new program is to entice those customers to switch by giving them a gift card for their old phone that can be used toward a new iPhone.
