Yesterday, the wait finally came to an end. At its own debut event, Samsung unveiled the newest flagships for its Galaxy S lineup, and sure enough there are two new devices for potential buyers to choose from. Also expected, there’s not much of a difference between the two handsets, but the differences speak volumes all on their own.

After both HTC and Samsung unveiled their new handsets, there were plenty of questions being tossed around Twitter. Most of them sarcastic. Some of them not so much, though. I saw more than a few people put some extra focus on the Galaxy S6 edge, though, Samsung’s “other” flagship. And, the most frequent question I saw was: Why?

Specifically, what’s the point of the Galaxy S6 edge?

Let’s just reiterate here: the Galaxy S6 edge is basically the same phone as the Galaxy S6, save for one key difference: The pair of curved edges on the display. Unlike the Galaxy Note Edge from last year, which only offered one curved edge but also offered a bit of functionality withs specific features, the Galaxy S6 edge offers twice the curved display, and yet not nearly the same functionality.

For all intents and purposes, the edges on the Galaxy S6 edge are just there to show off. And, for the life of me, I can’t quite figure out why that’s something people might want. Sure, it looks cool in the sense that the device is almost futuristic, but if there isn’t any kind of functionality added to the mix, I just don’t see a point.

And yet, I think the Galaxy S6 edge is the one device that Samsung should have launched. Meaning, I don’t think Samsung should have even launched the Galaxy S6 at all. I believe, wholeheartedly, that Samsung didn’t think they could get away with a device that upends the “traditional,” even if it is a slight variation. The Galaxy Note Edge was a leap of faith, so to speak, but the Galaxy S6 edge is a lot safer play, even with two edges.

I think Samsung would have been fine with just the Galaxy S6 edge. And I would have loved to have seen them just launch that device. Also, it’s banana pants if the rumors are true and the Galaxy S6 edge is going to cost more than the Galaxy S6. The slightly larger battery isn’t worth any bump in price, and neither are the two edges — because of the lack of outright functionality with those edges.
