Earlier this month, we learned that Ubuntu for phones was finally shipping to consumers on the BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition. That was exciting for the platform, but some folks were likely turned off by the phone’s entry-level spec list. Thankfully, it looks like Ubuntu will soon get itself a more high-end smartphone.
Meizu today teased an Ubuntu version of its MX4 Android smartphone. In its tweet, the company said that the “MX4 Ubuntu edition” is awaiting us, and it included an image that shows a version of the MX4 running Ubuntu for phones.
The Android-powered Meizu MX4 features a 5.36-inch 1920x1152 display, octa-core processor, 20.7-megapixel rear camera, 2GB of RAM, and 16/32/64GB of built-in storage. While we don’t have many details on the MX4 Ubuntu edition, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Meizu just load Ubuntu for phones onto the regular MX4 hardware. That’s exciting news for anyone that’s interested in a higher-end Ubuntu smartphone. Now we just need to find out how much the MX4 Ubuntu edition will cost and how widely it’ll be available.
