Remember that time that Microsoft acquired Acompli and then re-released that app as Outlook nearly two months later? Well, it looks like that situation may soon play out again.
Sources tell TechCrunch that Microsoft has acquired Sunrise Calendar, which offers a popular calendar app on Android, iOS, the Mac, and the web. The app is free and is compatible with Google Calendar, iCloud, and Exchange accounts. It’s said that Microsoft paid “at least” $100 million for Sunrise.
Microsoft hasn’t yet commented on this rumor, but the company did announce its acquisition of Acompli in December, so it’s possible that we could get an announcement related to this Sunrise deal if it’s true.
As for what’s going to happen with Sunrise, well, that’s still a mystery. We could see Microsoft rebrand it with some new, more Microsoft-y name, or Sunrise could just stick around as is. What we do know is that Microsoft is getting pretty interesting lately, making big moves to become a larger player in the mobile world as a whole.
Have you ever used Sunrise on your Android or iOS device?
