When Android 5.0 was officially released to AOSP, HTC said that it would push Lollipop to the One (M7) and One (M8) in 90 days. And while it has updated some of its international One models to Android 5.0, other versions remain on KitKat with the February 1 deadline looming. As a result, HTC has decided to share an update on the matter.
Mo Versi, HTC’s VP of Product Management, has posted a letter on the HTC USA website that confirms that HTC won’t hit its 90-day update goal for “some” carrier versions of the One (M7) and One (M8). Versi explains that while HTC has made great progress on the updates so far, Google has had to take care of several issues with Lollipop. This has delayed HTC’s rollout because it needs to take the time to incorporate all of these fixes into its own code.
Versi goes on to say that HTC is still testing its updates with carrier partners and that the company hopes to have some good news to share in the near future.
The news that some carrier versions of the One (M7) and One (M8) will miss HTC’s February 1 Lollipop deadline is definitely disappointing, but it’s also understandable. If HTC had pushed out Android 5.0 updates that contained issues, its users may have gotten upset at having received messed up code, and HTC would have had to work to incorporate those fixes and push more updates out. As a result of HTC’s decision to wait, users will get functional software just a bit later than originally anticipated.
