The search engine used by millions of iOS users could switch next year.
As it stands, Google is the default Safari search engine on iOS devices, but that deal is slated to come to an end in 2015. According to The Information, both Microsoft and Yahoo have reached out to Eddy Cue, Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services, about a deal to make Bing or Yahoo the default Safari search engine.
It remains to be seen which search engine will be the default in Safari in 2015, but there’s certainly incentive for all three companies to claim that title. Google isn’t likely to lose its spot atop the search hill if it loses, and I’m sure that many iOS users would switch to Google if it were no longer the default, but many other users would likely never bother to change and just stick with the default. That’d give Bing and Yahoo a nice boost in search market share if they can become the iOS default search engine.
