AT&T today made some tweaks to its GoPhone prepaid plans that subscribers will probably want to be aware of. The top-end prepaid smartphone plans now offer unlimited data, but — yes, there’s a catch — you’ll be throttled after crossing a usage threshold.
The $60 plan includes 2.5GB of high-speed data, but rather than being charged $10 for an extra gigabyte after that, you’ll have unlimited data at a throttled speed of 128kbps until the end of that monthly cycle. There’s also a $45 plan that offers 1GB of high-speed data and then unlimited data at 128kbps thereafter. That $45 plan used to be available exclusively at Walmart, but now you can sign up for it on AT&T’s website.
AT&T also still offers a $40 plan with 500 minutes of talk, unlimited text and 500MB of data, as well as a $25 plan with 250 minutes of talk, unlimited text and 50MB data packs that cost $5 each.
This is a pretty big move for consumers on AT&T’s $60 and $45 prepaid smartphone plans, as it means that they won’t necessarily have to shell out an extra $10 for more data once they use up their base allotment. AT&T’s GoPhone account management page still shows the $10 1GB (500MB for the $45 plan) add-on, so it looks like you may be able to add more high-speed data if you’d like.
