In-flight Wi-Fi is pretty awesome, but let’s face it: it can also be painfully slow. AT&T announced back in April that it had planned to change that by offering its own high speed, 4G LTE-based in-flight connectivity, but now it appears that the big blue carrier has changed its mind.
AT&T has axed its plans to launch an in-flight Wi-Fi service. AT&T spokesman Fletcher Cook told Reuters that Ol’ Blue had reviewed its investment portfolio and that it no longer wanted to go after the in-flight Wi-Fi market. Instead, AT&T will focus on “transformative investments, such as international and video.”
Obviously we’ll never know how well AT&T’s in-flight Wi-Fi would’ve worked, but hey, more competition is always a good thing. Instead of working on helping to get fliers online, it looks like AT&T will focus on acquiring Iusacell and expanding its reach in Mexico.
