Last night, Motorola began pushing the test version of its Android 5.0 update to the Moto X (2014) Pure Edition, showing that it’s still committed to pushing updates quickly. The test is limited to select Motorola Feedback Network members that own the Pure Edition of the Moto X, though, which means that most folks won’t get to try it out. Thankfully, a video has surfaced that shows the update in action.
The folks at Droid-Life managed to sideload the Moto X (2014)’s Lollipop update onto their device and then recorded a near-10 minute video that shows it off. Unsurprisingly, the update looks mostly like vanilla Android 5.0, just like the old Moto X, G and E ran a mostly vanilla version of Android. There are a few tweaks worth mentioning, though.
Motorola’s special software features, like Moto Display, Moto Voice and twist to activate the Camera app are all intact here. Motorola has included the Ambient Display feature that’s found on the Nexus 6 as well, though, letting you choose how you’d like to see your alerts when the Moto X’s screen is off. Activating Ambient Display will disable Moto Display.
Overall this update looks mostly like you’d expect it to. It’s good to see Motorola sticking to its efforts of rolling out Android updates quickly and not messing with vanilla Android much, though. It’s also awesome that Ambient Display is included too. Nice work, Moto.
There’s still no word on when Motorola will begin pushing Android 5.0 to us regular folk. If you’ve got a Moto X (2014) Pure Edition and don’t feel like waiting, though, Droid-Life has the update available for your sideloading pleasure.
