Nine months after Lenovo revealed its plans to purchase Motorola Mobility from Google, the deal has been completed.
Motorola has confirmed that it is now “part of the Lenovo family of companies.” Moto explains that it’s excited to be part of Lenovo, a company that Moto says shares its mission and brings a global scale and diverse product portfolio. With their combined portfolio of smartphones, wearables and PCs, Motorola says that the two firms will be positioned to “push the bounds of choice and value.”
Now that the deal is done, Motorola is officially a wholly owned subsidiary of Lenovo. There aren’t many other major changes coming to the company, though, as its headquarters will remain in Chicago and its Motorola, Moto and DROID brands. Motorola says that it will also continue to focus on “pure Android and fast upgrades.”
It’s good to hear that Motorola will retain its brand, as it’s well known in the US, and that it’ll continue to focus on offering vanilla Android and fast updates since those are things that earned Moto a lot of praise over the past year or so. What will be interesting is seeing what being a Lenovo subsidiary can do for Motorola and vice versa, especially since Lenovo is a big mobile player in Asia where Moto isn’t and Moto is big in the US while Lenovo isn’t.
What do you hope to see come from this Lenovo acquisition of Motorola?
