Apple CEO Tim Cook comes out as gay, says he'll 'continue to advocate for equality'

Tim Cook took over as Apple CEO in August 2011 following Steve Jobs’s decision to resign due to health issues. Since then we’ve been getting to know Cook and his way of managing Apple, and today another big piece of the CEO has been revealed.

In an editorial written for Bloomberg Businessweek, Tim Cook wrote that he is “proud to be gay,” saying that it is “among the greatest gifts God has given me.” Cook goes on to explain that being gay has given him a better understanding of what it’s like to be in the minority and given him the confidence to be himself. The exec also says that while privacy is important to him, if the news that Apple’s CEO is gay can help someone or bring comfort to them, “then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.”

Tim Cook’s announcement has little to do with mobile or Apple as a company. It’s still a major piece of news, though, as Cook is one of the most powerful executives in the world. Now that Cook has come out, he says that he’ll continue to focus on being the best CEO that he can and that Apple will “continue to fight for our values.”
