Sprint confirms WiMax 4G network shutdown date

It looks like we will indeed have to pour one out for Sprint’s WiMax network next year, as the big yellow carrier has confirmed its plans to shut down the service in 2015.

Sprint spokesperson Adrienne Norton has told FierceWireless that Sprint will indeed shut down its WiMax network on November 6, 2015, a date that was recently leaked by an internal Sprint document. Norton said that Sprint phones that support both WiMax and 3G will continue to work after the shutdown, but that “most” WiMax users are eligible to upgrade to a new device due to their current model’s age. Sprint is also planning to make offers to some postpaid WiMax users ahead of the network shutdown.

At this point, it’s likely that most anyone using a Sprint WiMax phone is eligible for an upgrade to a newer device. The good news is that we’re still a year away from the WiMax shutdown, and so anyone that is still using a WiMax phone has plenty of time to save up for a new device.
