Adopting a new device into your life is supposed to be easy, but we all know that that’s not always the case. It can be especially more difficult for the early adopters, the people who see something new, something that gets quite a bit of attention pre-release, and jump on the first chance to make it theirs. I’ve personally tried to cut back on being the first adopter, simply because I’ve been burned in one way or another too many times in the past. But, some devices show up that you just can’t fight — and I understand that.
Tablets were that device for me. I don’t even know why. I think in my head, quite often, I have this image where I picture my laptop in front of me, my fingers typing away, and my tablet next to me, displaying important information from one app or another. Or, I’m playing some great game on it, right from bed. Basically, a device meant to make easy things even easier. Convenience and all that.
That ultimately never really worked out, though.
So my early adopting days may be behind me. Or that could just be a dream, which is meant to crumble apart eventually. Maybe even by the end of this month, who knows. But, what I do know is that I’m definitely still tempted from time to time. There are devices that keep crawling back in front of my eyes, and make me want to just buy it already.
Google Glass is one of those things. Every single time it pops back up in the cycle (for positive things), like when Google releases it into the Google Play Store, I sit there on the “buy now” page and get pretty close to hitting that button multiple times in a day.
I go back-and-forth with this, and I did earlier today, and I may do it again. But, while I find reasons why I might want it, or even use it, I also come to the conclusion that I’m just not ready for it. All of those situations I come up with, “I’ll use it when I’m out walking around!” or whatever else are just short-term, instant situations. The rest of the time it will just be sitting on a table, doing nothing.
If I’m not going to use it all the time, or even multiple times in a day, then I can’t justify owning it — or anything for that matter. Every gadget I own right now, phones, consoles or whatever else I use all the time. And then when the price tag gets thrown in there, I’m still at the point where I laugh when I see it.
