After first giving us a preview of its Voice over LTE (VoLTE) way back in early 2011, Verizon announced today that the service is finally going live soon.
Verizon announced today that its Advanced Calling 1.0 service — which includes HD Voice and Video Calling — will begin rolling out “in the coming weeks.” In order to use the service, both callers will need to be in a 4G LTE coverage area and have a VoLTE-enabled phone.
Once connected to an Advanced Calling 1.0 call, users will easily be able to switch from a voice-only call to a Video Call and back again. Both the voice-only call and the audio part of a Video Call will utilize HD Voice.
Verizon didn’t say exactly where it plans to roll out its Advanced Calling 1.0 service initially, but it does plan to eventually make it available across its LTE network. The big red carrier also says that the feature will be enabled “on a number of devices” through a software update.
Considering that we’ve been hearing about Verizon’s VoLTE service for more than three years now, it’s nice to see that the functionality is finally about ready to go live. Are features like high-quality voice and the ability to quickly switch between voice and video calls important to you?
