Samsung has been known for its all-plastic mobile hardware in the past, but today the company officially went metal.
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is a new Android 4.4.4 smartphone that, unlike Galaxy devices that came before it, boasts a metal edge that goes around the outside of its frame. Meanwhile, its front and rear panels are both plastic, with the latter being dimpled and removable.
Despite the fact that the Galaxy Alpha has the premium touch of a metal frame, its specs are more mid-range. They are as follows:
Samsung says that the Galaxy Alpha will launch “at the beginning of September” in Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver and Scuba Blue colors. There’s no word yet on exactly which markets will get the Alpha or how much it’ll cost.
While the Galaxy Alpha’s front and rear panels are still plastic, its metal edge helps to give it a more premium feel while maintaining a light body and removable backside. Overall the Galaxy Alpha looks like a nice device that trade off some of the Galaxy S5’s high-end specs for a more high-end feel.
