Good news, Android fans, because Google’s got an app update that will bring your week to a nice close.
Google Maps is now receiving an update to version 8.2, complete with a number of notable tweaks. Perhaps the biggest is support for voice commands in navigation, which lets users tap a microphone button while navigating and ask questions like “What’s my next turn?,” “How’s traffic ahead?” and “What time will I get there?”
Another big addition to Google Maps v8.2 is the app’s ability to show elevation for biking directions. Users can even compare the elevation of different routes to decide just how much climbing that they’d like to do.
Other tweaks noted by the folks at Android Police include the Your Places section being moved to the app’s slide-out menu, the Uber card being moved to the “Car” tab and the ETA no longer being displayed in bold type.
So yeah, this v8.2 update to Google Maps looks to be a biggie. Support for voice commands while in navigation is a nice inclusion because, as I’m sure you know, trying to look at and navigate your phone with your hand can be dangerous while driving. These voice commands make using Google Maps navigation while behind the wheel a safer experience.
