Last year Verizon launched its Device Payment Plan as a way for customers to spread the full cost of a device out over 12 months. The plan was attractive to Verizon folk clinging to unlimited data because it provided an easy way to upgrade to a new device without losing their grandfathered plan. Unfortunately for those subscribers, though, the Device Payment Plan is no more.
A Verizon support page has confirmed that the Device Payment Program was officially killed off on July 13. Any customers already enrolled in the Device Payment Plan can continue that plan until their balance is paid off. However, anyone that wants to purchase a new phone or tablet on an installment plan will need to sign up for Verizon Edge.
The loss of the Device Payment Plan may not seem like a big deal with the existence of Verizon Edge, but any Verizon customers with unlimited data will lose their coveted plan if they switch to Edge. That means that if a Verizon user wants to continue to cling to their unlimited data bucket, they’ll need to pony up hundreds of dollars at the cash register to pay full retail for a device.
