Next week, Google's going to show off new things. Probably a bunch of new things, as they tend to do. Which shouldn't be a surprise, considering how much Google's got going on these days. From Android to things that spin-off from Google's mobile platform, to just about anything else you might be able to think of, Google's probably got something they could show off to indicate what's next.
For most people, though, Google I/O is all about Android, and what's coming down the pipe in the next public release. Much like Apple's WWDC, the conference has a lot going on, but for quite a few people there's only a certain amount of specific things people are expecting to hear.
This year might be a bit different, though. Android's great, and there's probably plenty of new things that Google wants to unveil, but they're also planning on making plenty of time on stage for Google Glass, but also Android Wear. At this point, we can expect Google to be busy during their keynote, but we should also anticipate plenty of great stuff for the consumer to get unveiled.
(And let's not forget about all the stuff keynote attendees are going to get from Google as a gift...)
For fans of Android, or people who follow the platform at all, these sorts of events have trained us to get excited for what's coming next. More than that, though, there was a point in time not too far in the past where it felt like every single update Android received, there was something (or usually more than one thing) to get really excited about. We've just been taught, through show-and-tell, that updates to Android generally mean great new things for the end user.
It's one reason why when we see something like Android 4.4.4 pop up out of nowhere, the speculation can tend to run rampant. It's okay, in this particular case, that nothing major made it into the release, just because we've got I/O right around the corner. Android 4.4.4's a small update -- we want the real deal, right? What's the next big thing for Google?
So I've been thinking about what I'm looking forward to seeing at Google I/O this year. What I want to see Google unveil for their mobile platform. And, I think for the first time ever, I can't think of anything. Not anything major, anyway. I'd like to see some changes to the Notification Shade, maybe, but that's geared more towards proprietary software from manufacturers like HTC and Samsung, not so much Google directly.
I don't know what I want to see Google add into Android. At this stage in my life, as I've been right there with the platform as it's grown up, I think Google's at the point where anything they add is just a bonus. Just like with their recent update to Google search, which allows you to open up a music app and start listening to music from an artist you've just searched for right from the results, they're basically just launching things that I didn't even know I wanted.
That may be one reason why I'm so excited for this particular I/O. Simply because I don't have any expectations, and I feel like there's a real chance that pretty much everything they announce for their mobile platform is just going to be something to add icing to the overall cake beneath. (Or lollipops, maybe.) Do I want to hear that they've made further improvements to the overall stability of the software? Sure, of course. But that's definitely something I expect, and don't imagine I'll be let down.
I just want to see more Android Wear, and the devices that will be running the platform this year (and their price tags).
But is there anything you want to see Android bring to the table? Anything that you're hoping to see Google announce? Let me know!
