Motorola prepping Android 4.4.4 update for Droid Ultra, Maxx and Mini

Remember how the Droid Ultra, Maxx and Mini were all supposed to get updated from Android 4.4 to Android 4.4.3 soon? Well it turns out that that’s no longer the case. Don’t worry, Droid owners, because this is actually good news.

Motorola’s David Schuster took to his Google+ page recently to announce that Moto will be skipping the Android 4.4.3 update for the Droid Ultra, Maxx and Mini and instead will bump them to Android 4.4.4. The reason for the decision is that a “significant” OpenSSL security vulnerability is unpatched in Android 4.4.3 but its addressed in 4.4.4, so Motorola will be bumping its Droids directly to 4.4.4.

Unfortunately, the news of the move to Android 4.4.4 also means that Motorola must re-submit its update for carrier approval. Schuster expets that this process will take 3 to 5 weeks.

Obviously it’s kind of a bummer that Droid Ultra, Maxx and Mini owners now have to wait even longer to get an updated version of Android onto their devices. The wait will be worth it, though, because not only will they be bumped up to the latest and greatest version of Android, their update will also include the patch for that nasty OpenSSL bug. Win-win!
