Earlier this month, a rumor claimed that Apple might be planning to take the wraps off of its wearable device in October. Now another report has corroborated that claim and added a couple of other details about the device.
Reuters sources are saying that Taiwanese company Quanta Computer Inc. will start mass production of Apple’s smartwatch in July ahead of an October launch. The wearable will reportedly feature a “slightly rectangular” display that measures 2.5 inches diagonally. Another tipster says that the watch face will stick out slightly from its band to create an arch shape, that it will be touch-friendly and will include wireless charging support.
The Apple smartwatch is expected to be able to perform some functions on its own, but it will need to be paired with a smartphone or tablet to carry out functions like messaging and voice chat. It’s also said that the wearable will be able to collect data on the wearer’s heart rate and other health data.
The wearables category has steadily been growing over the past year or two, and we’ve recently seen major manufacturers like Samsung and LG getting in on the action. Now it looks like the category will grow even further later this year with the debut of Google’s Android Wear platform and Apple’s device. We’ll have to wait and see how these products perform before declaring a winner, but one thing that’s certain is that the wearables category is definitely heating up.
