The iOS 8 split-screen multitasking saga continues! Just a few days after the discovery of some iOS 8 code that hints at the feature, a developer has put together a little demonstration of how iPad split-screen multitasking works.
Developer Steve Troughton-Smith has put together a quick video showing Safari on the iPad being put into the split-screen mode. Using the iOS 8 simulator, he puts Safari into 1/2 mode, 3/4 mode and 1/4 mode. It appears that the gesture used to control split-screen multitasking is a two-finger swipe.
In addition to this demo, Troughton-Smith notes that the split-screen feature doesn’t appear to work in portrait mode, though it’s not clear if Apple intends it to work that way or if it’s just a result of the simulator being buggy.
Tablets have long been fighting a battle against claims that they can’t be used for content creation. Samsung has attempted to disprove that claim with its Note products and features like the S Pen stylus and Multi-Window multitasking. Now it appears that Apple is set to fight that notion by enabling the iPad to run two apps side-by-side. It’s not yet known when this feature will actually be rolled out to the public, but it’s good to see the iPad getting such a major addition.
