Rumors of a Microsoft-made smartwatch have been floating around for more than a year now, but so far we’ve yet to get any concrete details on the device. That may have changed today, though, as a Gear Live writer claims to have used the watch himself.
Andru Edwards says that he spent some time with a person testing Microsoft’s smartwatch several months ago. Edwards says that he was able to get some details on the device from this source, including its design and features. The watch is said to have an “elongated form factor” similar to Samsung's Gear Fit. The device’s display is said to be “flat glass” and not of a high resolution. The inner part of the watch that goes against your wrist will reportedly be curved to make it more comfortable to wear.
The inside of the Microsoft smartwatch reportedly includes a heart rate monitor, accelerometer, gyroscope, GPS and a galvanic skin response detector, which measures the changes in the electrical resistance in the skin using sweat. A similar technology is used in lie detector tests. All of these sensors could be used to improve how you interact with games and possibly allow the game to change based on how you’re reacting to it.
Details of this report line up with previous rumors concerning Microsoft’s smartwatch, including the claim that it’ll work with iOS, Android and Windows Phone. That’s a smart move by Microsoft, as it’ll need wide platform support if it wants to gain traction in the wearable market, especially with Android Wear and Apple’s wearable on the way.
