Earlier this week a rumor claimed that Apple is prepping some iPhone-compatible “smart home” software for debut at WWDC next week. At the time, details on the project were fairly light. That’s changed today, though, and it looks like the program may be less ambitious than some may have expected.
Sources speaking to GigaOm claim that Apple’s smart home project will focus on helping devices to connect over Wi-Fi and may also include Bluetooth voice control. Instead, it’s said that Apple will certify products as being compatible with the iPhone, similar to the way that it uses the “Made for iPhone” label with accessories.
So what will Apple announce next week? It’s said that the Cupertino firm could bring out partners, devices and other products that are Made for iPhone, guaranteeing that they’ll work with iOS hardware.
If today’s report is accurate, then Apple’s smart home project is likely a bit less exciting than some folks were hoping for. As GigaOm points out, though, this could just be Apple’s way of dipping its toes in the smart home water and, if successful, could lead to a more ambitious effort in the future.
