Verizon to roll out Voice over LTE later this year, will have 'robust' phone selection at launch

Apparently Verizon’s all about beefing up its LTE offerings this week. Just a day after detailing its XLTE service, the big red carrier has revealed its plans for Voice over LTE (VoLTE) support.

Verizon says that it plans to begin rolling out VoLTE/HD Voice later this year. The service will offer “high-quality calling” as well as an improved video calling experience and the ability to instantly switch between voice-only and video calls.

Of course, in order to take advantage of Verizon’s VoLTE service, you’ll need a compatible handset. Ol’ Red says that it plans to have a “robust” selection of VoLTE-enabled smartphones available when the service launches. Additionally, it plans to add VoLTE capabilities to select devices through software updates.

Verizon has been talking up its VoLTE plans for some time now. Heck, it gave us a demo of the service on an LG Revolution way back in early 2011. And while we still don’t know exactly when the service will go live, I’m betting that now that AT&T has announced a firm launch date for its own HD Voice offering, Verizon will do the same shortly.
