Late last year, ZTE chose a unique method of selling its Firefox OS-based Open smartphone, taking to eBay to offer the device straight to consumers. Apparently going that route worked out for ZTE, because today it announced that it’s doing the same thing for the Open C.
ZTE is now selling the Open C through its official eBay store, pricing the device at $99.99 in the U.S., £69.99 in the U.K., €84.99 in Germany and $99.99 in Russia and other European countries. The Open C is available in black and comes unlocked and without any preloaded carrier apps.
Announced at MWC earlier this year, the ZTE Open C features a 4-inch WVGA display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 3-megapixel rear camera, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and 1400mAh battery.
The ZTE Open C also comes preloaded with Firefox OS version 1.3, the newest flavor of Mozilla’s mobile OS. Version 1.3 of Firefox OS includes many new and notable features, including dual-SIM support, music controls on the notifications tray and lock screen, improved app search for seeking out apps in the Firefox Marketplace and the web, messaging improvements and performance enhancements.
While the ZTE Open C’s spec sheet may not stand up to most other smartphones on the market, it’s worth remembering that both the device and Firefox OS are targeted at first-time smartphone buyers and consumers that are in the hunt for a handset that’ll be easy on the wallet. And at just $100 unlocked and contract-free, the ZTE Open C certainly qualifies as “affordable.”
