It's the start of a new month, and while that mostly means that we had to endure a seemingly endless parade of poor April Fools' Day pranks, it also means that we've got a fresh batch of Android platform distribution stats to pore over.

Google today shared the distribution numbers for each version of Android that has accessed the Play Store during the 7-day period ending today, April 1. Android 4.4 KitKat saw quite a jump this month, more than doubling from 2.5 percent in March to 5.3 percent in April. Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean actually lost a little bit of market share in April, dropping from 62 percent to 61.4 percent. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich also fell this month, finishing the 7-day survey period at 14.3 percent.

Unsurprisingly, Android 3.2 Honeycomb managed to hold on to the same 0.1 percent market share this month that it's had for the past several survey periods. Android 2.3.3-2.3.7 Gingerbread continued its slide, ending the survey period at 17.8 percent, and Android 2.2 Froyo lost 1/10th of a percentage point to end April with a 1.1 percent share.

It's no surprise to see Android 4.4 continue to gain market share as an increasing number of devices are being updated to the newest version of Google's mobile OS. Still, it's great to see KitKat doubling its share in just one month. That share should continue to see some nice growth in the coming months as flagship devices like the Galaxy S5 and One (M8) hit store shelves with Android 4.4 in tow and get more consumers onto the freshest Android treat.
