There's been a lot of talk of dual-OS smartphones recently, with companies like Geeksphone, Karbonn Mobiles and Huawei all teasing plans to release handsets that can run two different platforms. However, now it appears that one firm may have had a change of heart about dual-OS devices.
Speaking to FierceWireless, Huawei has said that it has no plans to launch a dual-OS device, contradicting a statement made by its CMO earlier this month. "Huawei Consumer Business Group adopts an open approach towards mobile operating systems to provide a range of choices for consumers," the company explained. "However, most of our products are based on Android OS, [and] at this stage there are no plans to launch a dual-OS smartphone in the near future." Huawei CMO Shao Yang said last week that his firm was planning a smartphone that could run both Android and Windows Phone and would launch in the U.S. in the second quarter.
Huawei went on to say that its plans have changed since Yang made his statement, but it didn't go into any further detail about the decision. It did say that Microsoft is still a "key global partner," though, and it confirmed that it will release new Windows Phone hardware in 2014.
Dual-OS devices sound like a nice idea, as they would give the user the benefits of two platforms and the ability switch between them at will. However, it seems unlikely that most folks would bother alternating between the two OSes, opting instead to stick to one platform that they could get accustomed to and focus their app spending on. Smartphone fans that genuinely want a dual-OS device aren't totally out of luck, though, as Indian manufacturer Karbonn Mobiles is expected to launch a smartphone that runs both Android and Windows Phone later this year.
Would you use a dual-OS smartphone as your daily driver? If so, which two OSes would you most like to have on it?
